What is Speedball?

Speedball is a racquet sport invented in Egypt in in the early nineteen-sixties to help beginning tennis players. Today it is a sport in its own right, enjoying popularity not only in Egypt but in many other countries. A number of these countries are members of the International Federation of Speed-Ball (FISB).

Speedball can be played alone (solo and super solo), with two players (single match), or four players (double match).

How to play Speedball?

The International Speedball Federation (FISB) is the governing body of the game of Speedball and its duties and responsibilities include determination of the Rules of Speedball.

Types of competitions

Solo

In this type of competition the player hits the ball to rotate around the pole and hit it back again and so on for a fixed time.  The referee will count the hits during that time.

Super Solo

The player holds two rackets, one in each hand, and hits the ball with the racket in one hand and receives the ball by hitting it again with the racket in his other hand for a fixed time period.  The referee will count the hits during the time period.

The Solo Relay

Each team is composed of four players and each player will play one different type of play (position) for thirty seconds. The players play in succession each starting upon hearing the signal from the referee after thirty seconds.

Each player except the first one will start by hitting the ball while it is turning and so on until all four players play their four positions.

Single

In this type of competition two players play against each other, each hitting the ball in one direction while his opponent hits it in the opposite direction. The two players stand opposite each other, each player in one half of the court (each half is separated from the other by the neutral zone which is 60cm wide).

Double

In doubles four players play against each other in two teams. Each team is composed of two players, this can be two men (men’s doubles), two women (women’s doubles) or one woman and one man (mixed doubles).  Each team should remain in their side of the court during each game.

About us

Speedball Canada was first introduced to Canada in the province of Prince Edward Island in July 2016.

Mamdouh Elgharib literally brought Speedball to Canada in his suitcase.  During a business visit to Egypt he became reacquainted with the game and ended up bringing a few sample racquets and balls back with him to his home province of PEI.  It didn’t take long before Speedball grabbed the attention of young and old on the Island.  With sights on introducing the new sport to all of PEI and then on to the rest of Canada and North America, Mamdouh has founded Speedball Canada and is the President of the Canadian Federation of Speedball Inc.
